Alice Corfman

Alice Corfman

Alice Corfman was born in Aberdeen, Wash., during the Great Depression. She attended school there until graduation from the eighth grade. When World War II broke out, her family followed her father to Alameda, Calif., where he was called back into the Navy and where she finished her first two years of high school.

They returned to their Aberdeen home after the war, and Alice graduated from Aberdeen High in 1947 and entered Washington State College that fall. She received her teacher’s degree in the spring of 1951. She met her husband, Don, in the last semester. They were engaged before he was called into the Navy that fall, when she started her teaching career in North Seattle.

After their marriage, they lived in Burien, Wash., for a few years before moving to neighboring Des Moines. All seven of their children grew up here. Alice worked as a gift buyer at their Des Moines Drug Store and Burien Hallmark Shop until they sold their partnership in 1996, at which time Don retired.

They embarked upon years of traveling around the world until Don's death in 2016. Alice has lived since then at Judson Park Retirement Community in Des Moines.
